Structure your academic writing well in English
Participants need a proficiency level of B1/B2 or higher.
Well written English moves beyond the grammatically correct using quintessentially English structural rules at the sentence, paragraph and thesis level. Solid structure removes unnecessary distraction from content and is fundamental in any writing context.
The objectives of this workshop are to:
- Teach the structural elements expected by an English speaking-audience.
- Demonstrate application of these elements in daily work for stronger emails and cover letters to your internal and external partners.
- Practise using a structure roadmap to make the writing process of scientific articles, journal pieces and reports more efficient.
- Employ structural elements to assist readers navigate through complex academic works.
Following the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Write stronger and clearer sentences.
- Develop structurally sound paragraphs and paragraph sequences.
- Develop logically organized chapters and conclusions.
- Write introductions that clearly define a specific research space.
- Confidently adjust structure for audience, purpose and style.
- Write elegant and focussed messages which improve their impact on the receiver.
The workshop uses several approaches including individual feedback, small and large group interactions, and problem-solving activities.
Theoretical blocks are followed by a direct application exercise to a sample of participant writing. Participants are encouraged to submit one to two A4 pages of their own academic writing by email no later than one week before the course:
- Participants will use the sample to apply their learning throughout the day.
- An edited version will be returned during the workshop with individual feedback for comparison.
To derive maximum benefit from the workshop, the sample should ideally be a draft piece of writing that has not been edited by someone else. All samples of work will be held in utmost confidence and not shared with other workshop participants.
Participants will also practise developing the macro structure of a academic work as a writing roadmap.
